Triggers

An event or situation that causes grieving in the adopted child is known as a trigger. For years, my daughter’sTriggers birthday was a trigger for her grief. The weeks leading up to her birthday were filled with immense pain and she spent counteless hours in my arms crying.

Other triggers can be:

  • Mother’s Day
  • First day of each school year
  • Loss of friendships
  • Change in school
  • Cultural holidays and traditions (if internationally and/or transracially adopted)
  • Deaths (of pets and people)
  • Graduations
  • Weddings
  • Births
  • Adoptions

Parents: What trigger(s) affect your child? What do you do to help your child with their grieving process?
